For every Multi Server Environment both requirements and options needs to be considered carefully.
Database cluster solutions have been no options so far since the technical means have been available yet.
This has come to a change: EMIC's MySQL cluster will be able to provide database services for TYPO3 in the future - the forthcoming version of the "m/cluster" has been modified to suite the needs.
That this actually works has been verified by a test series (using a pre-release version) at the net&works labs. Being set up and tuned accordingly, m/cluster can now provide everything you need for

- high availability and
- managebility
in your mission critical environments.
m/cluster is commercial software (based on on the dual-licensed "MySQL" database software), but it comes at a fractional amount of the traditional commercial database clusters.
